• In water softeners, the resins exchange sodium ions for calcium and magnesium ions, thus loading up with limescale.

• The sodium in the brine pushes away the captured calcium and magnesium ions, which end up in the drain. The resins are thus recharged with sodium ions, ready for a new softening cycle.
