How regeneration works and the importance of ultra-pure salt:
In water softeners, the resins
exchange sodium ions for calcium and magnesium ions, thus loading up with limescale.
When the resins are saturated, the softener
draws water from the tank and passes it through the salt tablets,
creating a sort of brine.
The sodium in the brine pushes away the
captured calcium and magnesium ions, which end up down the drain, and the resins
are thus recharged with sodium ions, ready for a new softening cycle.
Given its purity, Idrosal ultra-pure salt
leaves no residue that can enter the resins.
